Why Did My Power Bill Go Up After Installing Solar? (And How to Fix It)

Installing a solar system is one of the smartest investments you can make for your Queensland home. However, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to open their first post-installation energy bill and receive a shock: the bill is higher than before!

If this has happened to you, don't worry—your solar system isn't broken.

The issue usually comes down to a shift in how and when power is being used. Here is why power bills often jump right after installation, and how adjusting a few simple daily habits can unlock the true savings of your solar setup.

1. The "Free Power" Trap

The most common reason for a post-solar bill spike is psychological. Once panels are on the roof, it’s easy to feel like electricity is now completely free.

Homeowners often start:

  • Running air conditioners for longer hours or at lower temperatures.
  • Adding new appliances (like a pool heater, second fridge, or EV charger).
  • Leaving lights and entertainment systems on continuously.

While solar power is free while the sun is shining, your home still relies 100% on grid electricity once the sun goes down (unless you have a battery). If your overall power consumption increases dramatically during the evening, your bill will go up.

2. Low Feed-In Tariffs vs. High Grid Rates

In South East Queensland, power companies charge significantly more to buy grid electricity at night (often 30c–45c per kWh) than they pay you for exporting excess solar during the day (often 4c–8c per kWh).

  • Exporting solar power during the day: Earns you a small credit.
  • Buying power from the grid at night: Costs you up to 5x more per kWh.

If you export all your solar during the day because no one is home, and then run high-energy appliances between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM, your export credits won't cover your night-time grid usage.

3. How Solar Changes How You Should Use Power

To get the lowest possible energy bill, the goal is simple: Maximize your self-consumption. You want to use as much power as possible while your solar panels are generating it.

💡 Simple Habits to Maximize Your Solar Savings:

  1. Shift Appliance Timers to Daytime: Set dishwashers, washing machines, and pool pumps to run sequentially between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
  2. Pre-Cool or Pre-Heat Your Home: Run your air conditioner during peak daylight hours to bring the house to a comfortable temperature before the sun sets.
  3. Stagger High-Load Appliances: Instead of running the dryer, washing machine, and dishwasher all at once, space them out throughout the day so you don't exceed your solar inverter's output limit.
  4. Consider Battery Storage: If your family naturally uses most of its energy after dark, adding a hybrid inverter and battery system (like SolaX Triple Power) lets you store your daytime energy for evening use.
