Roof Coating & Warranty Information

martinrudd • September 15, 2026

At Rudd Family Builders & Solar, we use the Dulux Acratex® roofing system for our roof restoration coating works.

When comparing roof coating systems, we believe customers should look beyond the advertised warranty period alone. The quality of the coating system, correct preparation, suitability for the roof, application requirements, maintenance conditions and the actual warranty terms are all important.

So “Why should I choose the 10-year Dulux warranty when someone else offers 20 years?”, I hear you ask

“Simple answer TRUST... "We don't select a roof coating purely by the warranty number. We look at the complete coating system, preparation requirements, technical support and the actual terms of the warranty. Dulux Acratex is the system we have chosen to use and stand behind. Their eligible roofing systems carry up to a 15-year material warranty, and we believe it gives our customers a very strong combination of product quality, technical backing and long-term performance.”

Understanding roof coating warranties

Roof coating warranties should be compared on more than the advertised number of years.

Different manufacturers offer different warranty periods depending on factors such as:

  • the specific coating system used
  • the roof substrate
  • the condition of the existing roof
  • surface preparation
  • primers and sealers used
  • number and thickness of coating layers
  • application conditions
  • applicator requirements
  • ongoing inspection and maintenance.

Some manufacturers advertise warranties of up to 20 years. These longer warranty periods may apply only to particular products, substrates and coating systems and remain subject to the manufacturer's individual warranty terms, conditions and exclusions.

Eligible Dulux Acratex roofing systems may carry a material warranty of up to 15 years, depending on the particular product, substrate and coating specification.

Where applicable, the manufacturer's warranty relates to the performance and integrity of the coating system and remains subject to Dulux's current warranty terms and application requirements.

Why we use Dulux Acratex®

Simple answer: TRUST... We have selected Dulux Acratex® based on the overall coating system, product performance, suitability for Australian conditions, technical specifications, manufacturer support and our confidence in the products when they are correctly prepared and applied.

We TRUST, Dulux Acratex® roof coatings are manufactured in Australia and are designed for Australian conditions, including exposure to UV and harsh weather. Dulux offers coating systems suitable for concrete tile, terracotta and metal roofing, depending on the condition and type of roof.

Coastal and Queensland conditions

Queensland roofs are exposed to high UV levels, heat, humidity, storms and, in coastal areas, salt and airborne contaminants.

These conditions do not automatically mean a roof coating warranty is invalid. However, regular inspection, cleaning and maintenance can be important to maintaining the condition of the roof and coating system.

Dulux Acratex products are designed for exterior use and Australian conditions, with roof coating systems developed to provide long-term protection, colour durability and resistance to weather exposure.

Australian Consumer Law

Manufacturer and workmanship warranties are provided in addition to rights and remedies available under the Australian Consumer Law.

Consumer guarantees apply automatically and cannot be removed simply because a manufacturer's warranty has expired or because particular warranty conditions have not been met.

Nothing in this information is intended to exclude, restrict or modify any rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law.

What should i consider when comparing roof coating systems?

  • exactly what the warranty covers
  • what is excluded
  • whether labour is included
  • whether maintenance is required
  • which roof types qualify
  • whether previously coated roofs qualify
  • what preparation is required
  • what happens if severe weather causes damage
  • who is responsible for workmanship
  • what remedy is provided if a valid warranty claim is accepted.

For us, the quality and suitability of the complete roof coating system is more important than choosing a product purely on the basis of the longest advertised warranty period.

Our objective is to provide a professionally prepared and applied roof restoration using a coating system that we are comfortable recommending to our customers.

FAQ

  • Is a 20-year roof coating warranty automatically better than a 10-15-year warranty?

Not necessarily. The warranty period is only one part of the comparison. Customers should also consider what is covered, exclusions, maintenance requirements, roof type, preparation requirements and whether labour or workmanship is included.

  • Does weather affect a roof coating warranty?

Roof coatings are designed to withstand normal exterior weather exposure, but a manufacturer's warranty should not be interpreted as protection against every possible weather event.

Conditions such as severe storms, hail, cyclones, falling debris or other extreme weather may cause physical damage to the roof or coating that is separate from a product manufacturing or formulation issue.

Weather is also important when a roof coating is applied.

Roof coatings need to be applied under suitable temperature, humidity and drying conditions and to a properly prepared surface. Rain, moisture, condensation or unsuitable temperatures during preparation or curing can affect coating performance.

This is one of the reasons we assess weather conditions before commencing coating works and follow the appropriate product and application requirements.

  • Does a Dulux roof coating warranty cover storm or hail damage?

A manufacturer's coating warranty should not be treated as insurance against storm, hail or other external physical damage. Warranty coverage depends on the cause of the problem and the manufacturer's current warranty terms.

  • Does coastal weather affect roof coatings?

Coastal roofs can be exposed to salt, humidity, high UV levels and airborne contaminants. Regular inspection, cleaning and maintenance can help preserve the condition and performance of the roof coating system. The coating system should also be selected, prepared and applied appropriately for the roof type and surrounding environment.

  • Why does Dulux's research, technical support and training matter when choosing a roof coating?

DuluxGroup employs approximately 8,000 people globally, including around 250 chemists and technologists working across research, development and technical innovation. It also operates dedicated customer support services and training academies across Australia and New Zealand, training more than 6,000 people each year.
