Mitigating Risk: Why Drones Change the Safety Equation

When a roof starts leaking or storm damage strikes across South East Queensland, finding the exact root cause has traditionally meant climbing ladders, walking across fragile tiles, or setting up expensive scaffolding.

At Rudd Family Builders & Solar, we’ve modernized this process. By combining high-resolution aerial drone capture with Martin’s 39+ years of building experience, we safely inspect residential and commercial roofs in extraordinary detail—ensuring accurate estimates and fully compliant repairs.

Traditional roof inspections carry inherent safety and property risks. Introducing aerial technology dramatically minimizes those hazards for both homeowners and tradespeople:

Zero Fall Risks:

According to workplace safety data, falls from heights remain a leading cause of industry injuries. By keeping our feet safely on the ground, we eliminate working-at-height exposure entirely during the assessment phase.

Protecting Fragile Surfaces: Walking across old terracotta, concrete tiles, or rusted metal deck roofing can inadvertently crack tiles, puncture waterproof membranes, or disturb degraded flashing. Drones glide overhead, capturing data without placing a single kilogram of physical weight onto a compromised roof.

Risk-Free Access to Complex Angles:

Multi-storey roof lines, steep pitched Queenslander roofs, and tricky commercial valleys can be inspected instantly without the cost, delay, or safety footprint of erecting scaffolding or using elevated work platforms (EWPs).

The Rudd Family Process: From Air to Action

Capturing aerial footage is only half the job. What matters is what happens after the flight:

Pre-Flight Airspace & Risk Check:

We evaluate weather conditions, secure the flight zone, and check local airspace rules across the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane.

Builder Review by Martin:

Martin reviews the footage through a builder's lens. Instead of just seeing "dirty tiles," he diagnoses structural sag, sub-membrane failures, tile degradation, or water ingress paths.

High-Definition Data Capture:

High-resolution video and stills sweep the entire roof profile, chimney flashings, solar arrays, and valleys.

Transparent Estimate:

You receive an honest, itemised report and quote based on indisputable visual evidence, backed by our QBCC license standards (QBCC #15485031).

The Legal Side: Commercial Drone Rules in Australia

Because we use drones as part of our business operations for building inspections, Rudd Family Builders & Solar strictly adheres to CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) laws.

Operating a drone for commercial gain or as part of a trade in Australia involves specific legal requirements:

CASA Operator Accreditation: Anyone flying a drone for business or as part of their job must hold a valid CASA Operator Accreditation via the myCASA portal.

Commercial Drone Registration: All drones used for commercial purposes must be registered with CASA, regardless of their weight class.

Standard Operating Conditions (SOPs): Commercial pilots must follow strict safety rules, including:

  • Keeping the drone within visual line-of-sight at all times.
  • Remaining under the legal ceiling of 120 metres (400 feet) above ground level.
  • Maintaining a safe distance of at least 30 metres away from other people, and never flying directly over people.
  • Flying strictly during daylight hours and avoiding operations in poor weather, fog, or heavy rain.

By complying with these federal regulations, we ensure every flight is completely legal, insured, and safe for the public and property.
