Why Doesn't My Power Bill Show How Much Solar My System Is Producing?
Opening your electricity bill after getting solar installed can be confusing. You might scan through the pages expecting to see a neat graph showing: "Your panels generated 600 kWh of solar energy this month."
Instead, all you see is a single line item labeled Solar Export or Feed-in Tariff (FiT) showing a much smaller number than you expected.
This leads many South East Queensland homeowners to wonder: "Is my solar system actually working, or is my energy retailer leaving out my solar generation?"
Here is why your power bill doesn't show your total solar production, how your electricity meter actually tracks energy, and where to find your true generation figures.
How to Check Your Actual Solar Production
If you want to know if your solar system is working at 100% capacity, don't look at your power bill. Here is where to check instead:
A. Your Inverter Screen
Look at the digital screen on your solar inverter (usually mounted in your garage or on an exterior wall). Press the display button to view Today's Yield (e.g., kWh) or Total Yield.
B. Your Monitoring App (SolaX Cloud)
If you have a modern system installed (like our SolaX hybrid inverters), you can log into your mobile monitoring app. The app communicates directly with the inverter on your roof and shows:
- Live Solar Generation (kW)
- Live Household Consumption (kW)
- Battery Charge Level (%)
- Historical Daily & Monthly Output Graphs
Why Energy Retailers Don't Measure Your Solar Generation
Your power bill comes from your electricity retailer (e.g., Origin, EnergyAustralia, AGL), and they calculate your bill using readings from your street digital meter (managed by Energex in South East Queensland).
Your street meter only sees electricity that crosses the line between your home and the grid:
- Power Coming IN (Grid Import): Electricity you buy at night or during heavy usage when solar isn't enough.
- Power Going OUT (Grid Export): Excess solar energy your home didn't use that gets sent back into the street grid.
The street meter has no way of knowing how much solar power was generated and used inside your house in real time.
The "Hidden" Solar Power: Self-Consumption
When your solar panels generate electricity during the day, that power goes straight into running your active household appliances first—your fridge, pool pump, washing machine, and standby power.
- Solar Generated: e.g., 25 kWh today
- Solar Used Directly in Home (Self-Consumption): e.g., 15 kWh
- Solar Sent to Grid (Export): e.g., 10 kWh
On your power bill, you will only see the 10 kWh exported.
The 15 kWh you used directly inside your house never touched the street meter. Even though it doesn't show up as a line item on your bill, it saved you money by preventing you from having to buy 15 kWh of expensive grid power!
